The Ministry with Money
Jesus’ ministry is best known for his miracles, grace, mercy, and forgiveness. What is commonly overlooked is that his ministry also required financial resources. This oversight can be found in the scripture of Acts 10:38, where Paul talks about Jesus “doing good and healing those who were oppressed of the devil.” The word doing good in Greek is euergeteo, which denotes benefactor; a philanthropist; one who financially supports charitable works; or a person who uses their natural resources to meet the needs of disadvantaged people. In other words, to provide food, clothing, and other commodities to meet a person's physical or material needs. The apostle Paul would amplify this philanthropic analogy in this letter to Timothy when he says, “Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their ‘own’ household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” 1 Timothy 5:8 (NIV)
