Joyful Vocation

Joy is Living Into Your Why

How do you define Joy? I tell my congregation this story at least two or three times a year, LOL. I worked as an architect for 13 years and a project manager for another seven years in the U. S. Army Corp of Engineers. I resigning as a GS-13-7. I made six figures and by the testimony of my customers, I was one of the best project managers in my division. I received cash rewards and cash step increases for my work with the government. I was happy. However, when I accepted my call to ministry that would be a huge decrease in my salary. To the extent that my wife questioned whether this calling was best for our family.

Yet accepting the call has blessed me beyond measure. To the extent that when I compare my years with the Corps versus my vocation for God, it looks like this. I made more money with the government, but I had fewer financial savings. I was happy with the Corps, but I was never satisfied. When I accepted my calling; I now have savings and investments well beyond what I did when I worked with the government. I now have joy well beyond what I could have imagined working for the government.

In summary, there is something about living into your “why,” my purpose, which is more gratifying than money. I am a witness like Solomon, being obedient to God and operating in His wisdom can come with financial blessings and joy!
